The Net Was Supposed to Set Us Free — So Why Do We Feel More Trapped?
The internet was built on a utopian promise — that infinite access to information would make us wiser, freer, and more connected — and almost nobody asks why the opposite seems to have happened.
The Idea
There is a philosophical concept worth reaching for here: the difference between a tool and an environment. A hammer is a tool — you pick it up, use it, put it down. An environment is something you inhabit. It shapes your posture, your attention, your sense of what is normal. The early internet was widely imagined as a tool. What we actually built was an environment — and one we never consciously designed for human flourishing. The philosopher Albert Borgmann wrote, before the internet existed in its current form, about what he called 'device paradigm': the tendency of modern technology to hide its workings while delivering a commodity. A central heating system delivers warmth but severs you from the ritual of gathering wood, tending a fire, reading the weather. Something is gained; something quieter is lost. The internet delivers information, connection, and entertainment with frictionless ease — and in doing so quietly displaces the slower, more effortful practices that used to structure meaning: deep reading, unmediated conversation, sitting with uncertainty. What makes this philosophically interesting is that the problem is not individual weakness. The architecture of the attention economy is explicitly engineered to override deliberate choice. Variable reward schedules, infinite scroll, notification pulses — these are not accidents. They are design decisions that exploit the brain's oldest systems. Asking someone to simply 'use their phone less' is a bit like asking someone to simply 'breathe less recycled air' in a sealed room. The question philosophy pushes us toward is not 'how do I resist?' but 'who built this room, and did anyone ask us if we wanted to live in it?'
In the World
In 2017, Tristan Harris — a design ethicist who had worked at Google — testified before the US Senate and said something that cut through the usual conversation about screen time. He did not talk about addiction or self-control. He talked about the slot machine. Specifically, he pointed out that the pull-to-refresh gesture on a smartphone feed is structurally identical to pulling a lever on a slot machine: same variable reward, same neurological hook, same compulsion loop. The comparison was not metaphorical. The engineers who built these features knew exactly what they were doing — some of them had studied B.F. Skinner. Harris had written an internal Google memo in 2013 called 'A Call to Minimise Distraction and Respect Users' Attention.' It went viral inside the company and changed very little. The economic incentives — advertising revenue tied to time-on-platform — were simply stronger than the ethical concern. What Harris described was not a failure of individual users, but a structural misalignment between what technology companies are rewarded for and what is actually good for the people using their products. This is exactly what philosophers mean when they say technology is never neutral. Every interface encodes values. The values encoded into most social platforms are not connection, curiosity, or calm — they are engagement, return visits, and time spent. Understanding that the room was built this way is the first genuinely useful step toward thinking clearly about how you move through it.
Why It Matters
Most conversations about the internet end up at the level of habit: put your phone in a drawer, turn off notifications, try a digital detox. These are not bad suggestions, but they treat a philosophical problem as a personal productivity issue. If you understand that the internet is an environment — not a tool — it changes the question you ask. Instead of 'how long did I spend online today?', you start asking 'what kind of person does this environment reward me for being?' Outrage, certainty, and performance tend to thrive online. Ambivalence, nuance, and quiet reflection tend to disappear. That is worth sitting with, because what flourishes in an environment eventually shapes the person who lives there. Borgmann's insight — that every technology carries a hidden trade — suggests that the cost of the internet is not just time. It may be certain habits of mind: the capacity for sustained attention, tolerance for ambiguity, the willingness to hold a thought long enough for it to become genuinely yours. None of this means logging off forever. It means entering these spaces with the same awareness you would bring to any powerful environment — knowing it has a design, and that the design has intentions that may not be yours.
