Autoimmune disease occupies a strange and uncomfortable position in medicine: it is not an immune system that has failed, but one that has become too committed to its job. In autoimmune conditions, that precision breaks down. The immune system begins flagging the body's own cells as foreign invaders and mounts a sustained attack against them. What is genuinely underappreciated is how profoundly psychological experience intersects with immune function. Chronic stress suppresses regulatory immune cells and amplifies inflammatory signalling — meaning the body's emotional state is not separate from its autoimmune activity, but actively shapes it. Living with autoimmune disease is not simply a physical experience. It is a negotiation between the mind and a body that has, in a very real sense, turned its most powerful systems inward.

This is a pattern that autoimmune researchers and psychologists now take seriously. There is a documented phenomenon sometimes called 'diagnostic limbo': the period before diagnosis when patients know something is wrong but cannot name it. Studies show this period carries its own psychological burden — often worse in terms of anxiety and depression than the period after diagnosis, even when the diagnosis itself is serious. Blair's public openness, including appearing at the 2019 Oscars with a visible walking cane, shifted something culturally.
